Using AI and Immersive Technologies to Experience the Future Self and Support Sustainable Dietary Choices
About
The team led by Professors Falk Uebernickel and Pattie Maes investigates episodic future thinking (EFT) interventions to encourage individuals to consider long-term consequences when making dietary choices. Using emerging technologies like virtual reality (VR) and generative AI, the research explores immersive, empathy-driven approaches to promote healthier and more environmentally sustainable eating habits.
Building on an existing MIT-developed AI application, the project leverages large language models (LLMs) to enable participants to chat with a simulated future version of themselves. The system incorporates individual behavioral patterns and health goals, while a digitally aged avatar visually represents the user at age 60. By making long-term consequences more personal and tangible, the intervention aims to enhance self-awareness and decision-making.
